The celebrity cult of today, I believe, is having a seriously detrimental effect on the types and quality of the News that we read. This is largely down to the red tops, but not even the broadsheets remain unaffected. The result is that increasingly we are reading poor quality and celebrity obsessed trash instead of finding out what is really happening in the world today.
Newspapers today, even the quality ones, are full of stories about sporting stars' indiscretions or what the biggest celebrities are wearing. If I want to read that, I would buy a magazine focused on celebrity stories, I do not want to read about it in a newspaper. These tittle tattle stories do not have an effect on my life, whereas interest rates, economic issues and environmental issues do.
I also hate the way that anything that happens in a country other than our own is deemed unimportant and irrelevant. You can read pages of trivial tat about things that are happening in our country, neighbours' disputes or a cat that has found its way home after its owner moved house.
Then tucked away on about page thirty are small news articles about the real issues that are affecting this world, such as the Middle East conflict or natural disasters in other countries.
Please, cut the rubbish and just give us the real news!
